An iCloud IMEI check and an Offline message in Find My answer different questions. Offline concerns the device's availability in a location service; it is not evidence that Find My has been switched off or that the iPhone is ready for a new owner. This matters when a seller points to a grey device icon and says the account lock is gone.
Read the label in its original context before drawing a conclusion. A location screen, an ON/OFF report, and an activation screen are different pieces of evidence.
What Offline and No location found actually tell you
Apple's Find My troubleshooting guide, published September 23, 2026, explains that a current location may be unavailable when a device's battery has run out. The app may instead display a previous location, or eventually show No location found.
Apple also distinguishes the Find My app from Find Devices on iCloud.com: their location availability and retention differ. A screenshot from one interface should not be treated as a complete description of the other.
Offline devices may still participate in Find My
Apple's Find My overview describes how supported devices can be found through the Find My network even when they cannot connect directly to the internet. Nearby Apple devices can help relay an approximate location.
This is another reason not to translate the word Offline into Find My OFF. Location availability depends on the device, settings, and circumstances; the account-protection question needs its own evidence.
Compare the labels without mixing their meanings
| Evidence | Question it addresses | Conclusion it does not support |
|---|---|---|
| Offline in Find My | Can the service currently reach or locate this device as expected? | The owner's account protection has been removed |
| No location found | Is location information available in this interface? | The phone is unlocked for another owner |
| Find My ON/OFF report | What status is returned for the submitted identifier? | Where the phone is now |
| Activation screen | What does this physical device require to proceed? | Its complete ownership or carrier history |
Keep the exact wording in your notes. Replacing all four observations with a single word such as “clear” makes it harder to see what remains unresolved.
An old map position is not a live reading
If a location screen includes a time, preserve it with the observation. A previous location can be useful to an owner searching for a missing device, but it should not be described as the phone's confirmed current position.
An IMEI status report does not update that map or provide access to the owner's Find My account.
Why Activation Lock can remain on an offline iPhone
Apple's Activation Lock explanation states that enabling Find My also enables Activation Lock. Apple stores the account-to-device association on its activation servers, which the device checks during activation or recovery.
The practical implication is that a phone being unreachable does not establish that this association has been removed. Powering it down is not the same action as an authorized owner completing Apple's transfer process.
For a buyer, the missing evidence is not a fresher map screenshot. It is whether the actual phone can proceed through setup without requiring the previous owner's account.
A pending erase is not a completed handover
Apple's remote-erase guidance says an erase requested while a device is offline begins when it next comes online. The same guidance says Activation Lock remains on after a remote erase.
Treat these as separate milestones:
- The owner has submitted an erase request.
- The device has actually received and completed it.
- Any account association needed for resale has been removed through the supported process.
- The buyer has checked the resulting setup screen.
A screenshot of a pending action does not demonstrate all four. Ask the owner to complete the transfer and allow verification before treating the phone as ready.
Lost-device protection and resale have different goals
If the iPhone is missing, use Apple's recovery guidance rather than a resale checklist. Do not remove account protection merely to make an Offline label disappear. If the device is being sold, the owner should perform the authorized handover while retaining control of their own credentials.
There is no need to share an Apple Account password or verification code with a buyer or an IMEI-report website.
When an iCloud IMEI check helps
The paid IMEIHub iCloud ON/OFF check reports whether Find My is returned as enabled for the supplied IMEI. It does not include the separate Clean/Lost detail, and it does not locate the phone.
Before using a result, match the submitted identifier to the device and note when the report was obtained. If the result conflicts with the actual activation screen, resolve that discrepancy with the owner and Apple before proceeding. Do not substitute repeated screenshots for a completed setup check.
IMEIHub's free basic IMEI lookup provides brand, model, and basic specifications. It is not a free iCloud, blacklist, or warranty report. Neither a free nor paid lookup removes an activation or carrier lock.
Ask the account-status question directly
Offline means you need to interpret a location-service observation; it does not certify that Find My is off. Keep location, pending actions, reported account status, and successful setup as separate checks.
If your remaining question is specifically whether Find My is reported as enabled, review the IMEIHub iCloud ON/OFF report and use it alongside verification of the physical device.
